    Date: Saturday, May 10, 2025

Activity: We will meet and leave from the Kiosk at the Bloody Basin Rd (Exit 259 off I-17) at 5:50 pm and drive to our starting point on the east side of the Monument.  The survey begins at sundown and consists of eight 6-minute stops along the Bloody Basin Rd.  We will simply step out of the vehicle and listen for the call of Common poorwill, Lesser nighthawk, and owls.  We'll finish around 10:30 pm with two stops at the Badger Spring Trailhead.

Bring a light jacket, water, snacks, and headlamp.

Space is limited.  Register in advance by email to DHaan@blm.gov with the names and number of persons in your party.

    2025 AFNM BioBlitz

This is an AFNM 25th Anniversary Event

Specific times, locations and detail are being developed in a series of meetings between now and the event.  Watch for details.  It will take place in different locations at different times over the weekend of May 31st/June 1st.

The event is being overseen by BLM, Arizona Game & Fish, Audubon Society, Friends of the Agua Fria NM and more.

Participants will utilize the iNaturalist app on their cell phones.  They should download the app and become familiar with it in advance.  It is hoped that we will have an on-line training session beforehand and some experts to advise on site.

The concept is to have citizen scientists observe, photograph and record plants and animals of all species across the monument.  Birds, mammals, trees, flowers, cactus, insects, reptiles, fish, whatever.  Check out iNaturalist to see what others have recorded.  The last time this was done was in May, 2016.  You can see the results as a "project" in the app.

If you don't know IDs, there will be experts there to help you.

    Stay tuned for more information.
